Isn't this supposed to be a love story?

I had been anticipating Tristan&Isolde to be a heartbreaking love story, but I was extremely dissapointed. It just didn't have enough balance between the war, politics, and romance. The movie seemed like it was supposed to be about love and fate conquering all, but the romance between Tristan&Isolde seemed to more of a subplot than the main focus. A lot of time was unecessarily spent on the feuding tribes and medieval politics, which didn't enhance the love story at all. It seems like they were trying to please all audiences, but it just didn't work. Tristan and Isolde's relationship was more lust than love, and in the end, Tristan had more loyalty to his king than to Isolde. It completely undermined the "love is greater than duty" message the trailers sent. Throughout the movie, the love between Tristan and Isolde just wasn't deep enough. You couldn't feel their pain or sadness, because it wasn't there. Their acting had the potential to make their love come to life, but with a weak storyline and bad direction, it didn't make it.
The only good things were the acting and visuals. U can see good careers ahead of James Franco and Sophia Myles. The battle scenes were fairly well-done, but very out of place and unecessary.
Overall, I give it a B-. If you like shallow love and unecessary action scenes for the sake of entertainment, go ahead and see this film. |
