2 Times the Ride of the First!

Way back in 2002 Jason Stathem crashed onto the 'action scene' in "The Transporter". It was very ambitious and frankly a novelty- who'd ever guess he (and the creators) could improve on that odd mix of action, stunts, and dry humor that makes Stathem sooo much cooler than James Bond. He does and it's a rare thing to see especially in the 'action genre'.
Basically there's a real story this time with multiple twists and turns that our hero must navigate and it moves about as fast as Jason can drive (which is pretty nicely). I really don't want to spoil any of it but, I will point out alot of the good stuff to get you to see it.
#1 The child actor isn't annoying (which is rare). I mean come on, imagine Dakota Fanning screaming as Jason trys to drive. #2 The action scenes (and stunts) are lavishly displayed but not as "eye candy" so much as "action scenes"- this film knows what it is and doesn't try to be anything but that. They're set-off like fireworks in a sort of explosive dance that's crisp and quite a marvel of editing. #3 Jason Stathem's wry delivery is priceless and he's got a 'everyman' quality that I've only seen in actors like Harrison Ford and John Cusake. #4 way cooler and inventive than James Bond. While James is mugging for the camera Stathem could almost ANY object- even a Fire Hose Nozzel to whup his butt.
I do miss the 'Indie-feel' of the first film but, the producers make good use of all the extra cash and don't scrimp on the action at all at least. One of the few sequals to actually surpass it's original. They should've called it "Transporter 2.0" as some catchy 'car name' as it more stocked and primed than your average sequal. |
