I went to Transamerica wondering how the story line would work... as all the hype and emphasis has been on the fact that "Bree" is a pre-op transexual.... and while that WAS a main thrust (as it were) of the movie, I found it to be a truly touching story of self-discovery and finding love and forgiveness. Felicity Huffman is brilliant and the rest of the cast is so fitting.... definitly one of the most moving films I've ever seen.
I felt Transamerica moved beyond the transsexual component and dealt with the much more significant issues of dealing with one's "ghosts" or past, estranged families, earning respect, acceptance and love from the people who are important, not to mention learning to love the person that you are inside.
There are some clumsy moments.... but I loved the fact that parts of it felt awkward... its very much about life and its ups and downs. |
