There is no more timely film than this, a murder/mystery blended with a mild romance. Simply put, the US is at war with the Arabs while a US oil firm seeks to purchase Russian oil assets in Kazikistan. A wall street analyst (Christian Slater) is asked to perform due dilligence on the deal after his best friend is mysteriously killed. He enlists the help of a recent Harvard MBA idealist (Selma Blair who delivers an excellent performance), and before long, the conflicts at his own firm (John Heard in an excellent role), strange goings on at the US oil company (Robert Loggia, good as usual) and the Russian company (welcome to the big screen Angie Harmon) set in motion a strange chain of events. As I saw this film, in "real life" the state owned chinese oil company was making a bid for a US oil company, and various corporate officers were being prosecuted for illegal activities. Definitely worth a look if your IQ is above 110 and you're familiar with the wall street parlance. |
