I was too stunned to laugh in the theater

Talk about "shock and awe." The Aristocrats is an exercise in extreme potty humor -- like you would not believe. While the directors do a bit of interesting digging with regards to the joke's background and what makes it funny, ultimately you sit waiting with a sort of morbid fascination to hear the next iteration of the joke.
In the theater I found myself smiling quite a bit but not really having the doubled-over belly laughs you hear so much about (actually, I don't remember anyone in the audience being wracked by laughing hysterics). Then, the next morning as I showered, I started telling my own version of the joke (improvised versions of the joke are integral to its form and humor) and I found myself laughing out loud...the more I tried to tell, the funnier it was, almost like tickling yourself. It seems nutty, but it's fun if only for the liberation of saying things that are more vile and horrendous than you've ever verbalized before in your entire life.
Ultimately it is that freedom -- the unrestricted license to express onesself, regardless of vulgarity -- that gives The Aristocrats (the film) its value. God bless America! |
