I was able to see this film a month in advance through a sneak preview. I went in with no preconceptions, as there had been no advertising for the movie yet. But let me say I was, at the least, pleasantly surprised.
The movie is definitely fast-paced; not in an action movie kind of way, but more like a traditional Shakespeare-era farce. There's love, mistaken identity, misdirection, physical comedy - - all the elements of a historical play. But there's also the tongue-in-cheek wit of today's better comedies and a love story that's sappy enough for romantic comedy fans, but not overly sweet.
As for whether you should go personally, the large audience I went with seemed to love it. Many commented that it was a great date film; like Shakespeare in Love, but much more witty/comical. Remember before you see it that it is intended to be a farce, like the plays of that time. It's NOT a drama, though it has dramatic elements, and NOT a modern romantic comedy, though it has elements of that. It's also fairly intelligent for those who are familiar with period comedy styles like the Commedia Del Arte.
All in all an entertaining, fun, romantic film with good laughs and a solid love story. |
