Romping, Rollicking, Romantic!

What a pleasure it is! Not at all what I was expecting, this Casanova is played as a romping, rollicking, swashbuckling romantic farce. In a similar vein as Shakespeare in Love, it pulls the neat trick of being less serious but ultimately truer about the nature of attraction. And incredibly its all done without anything that anyone might find to be objectionable: no coarse language, no nudity...who'd think it possible that there could be a Casanova story with so little sex?
While the story largely revolves around the characters played by leads Heath Ledger and Sienna Miller, in fact its an ensemble piece with a cast of gloriously funny characters. As a fan of Oliver Platt I was particularly happy with his comic-funny-sexy turn, and Lena Olin and Jeremy Irons were terrific too. There comes a point in the film when one realizes that the actors are greatly enjoying themselves, and it shows all over.
This movie is something that the entire family can enjoy...from the tweens all the way to the grandparents. I recommend it highly. Movies just don't get more fun than this. Casanova's the feel-good movie of the year! |
