Casanova is again, not really a story I am familiar with. So, I enjoyed this movie. After seeing Heath Ledger (Casanova) in Brokeback Mountain only a week before, it was interesting to see him in this role. I still found his performance to be lacking. He is at his finest in serious moments. As Casanova I thought he was pretty weak. The story though, overshadowed the awkward casting. I actually found much of the casting to be off. This movie could have been better with a different cast.
The story is about a guy, Casanova who is pretty much a womanizer. He sleeps with tons of women and even goes after nuns, which is the opening of the movie. He escapes and is then caught by the police but then let go by a city official. He warns him that he much change his image and marry someone of respectability and so he choses the city virgin. She is known by all as being pure. But after his engagement he is met by a guy who is in love with her and when he challenges him to a fight, though he has no talent in it, his older sister fights for him and is unmasked. This soon becomes appealing to Casanova and decides this woman is for him. She though, doesn't know how he truly feels and she is already ingaged to a guy from another city whom she hasn't met. It becomes a web of love and lust. However, the higher authorities and members of the Catholic Inquisition want Casanova and will go to whatever measures to find him. It is a story of love, but there is much wit and humor from Casanova's story. It's not a great period piece but the story is effective. B |
