Firstly, this is NOT a light-hearted Christmas comedy and is NOT suitable for children.
It is a simplistic formula movie that must have been written by the usual Hollywood suspects.
Let me see if I can list the stereotypes in this disfunctional family without giving away too much:
The mom who has no problem discussing her daughter's virginity with a person she just met and insists her son sleep with his girlfriend while in her house.
The stoner son who directs documentaries in San Francisco.
The angry daughter who works at NPR.
The over achieving son who couldn't possibly be happy with the successful girlfriend.
The uptight girlfriend who just needs alcohol, pot and getting laid to instantly turn her into a well balanced person.
And finally, the writers had the handicapped, gay and bi-racial relationship stereotypes left over, and apparently had to cram it all into one son's character.
And the family is just plain mean and unbelievably rude durng a lot of this supposedly holiday timeframe.
Although Claire Danes' and Racheal McAdams' performances are great, they are still constrained by their simplistic stereotypes.
Avoid this movie. The writers, directors and producers didn't put that much effort into trying to be creative, so you should not bother to waste your time and money on it. The only thing humorous about this movie is laughing at how it ever got made. |
