To say that "Poseidon" is the type of movie that will either sink or swim (pun unintended) with the viewer would most certainly be obvious. To expect anything more out of this piece of eye candy other than special effects would be droll.
"Poseidon" serves its purpose as an adrenaline rush. The dialogue is certainly less than inspired. The plot doesn't really contain much logic, but it's still fun to watch. Unfortunately, some of the characters you actually will like die (I won't say which ones) while some of the more irritating ones survive for what seems like the mere purpose of annoying you some more. Of course, the ending is a bit predictable. Seriously, though, isn't it obvious that at least one person is going to make it in the end?
The acting is fair, but nothing special. Kurt Russell is good in it. He and Richard Dreyfuss were both a lot better than their co-stars, which doesn't really say much. Josh Lucas is just so-so, but his character is fun to watch on screen.
The directing comes across as somewhat halfhearted, to put it kindly. The editing is okay, but there were a few unnecessary scenes (such as the first scenes with Josh Lucas running throughout the boat) that should have been removed. However, they don't hinder the watchability of "Poseidon" because the viewing time is so darn short.
The visuals are impressive! The effects are what make this movie go by so fast. Frankly, the visuals steal the scenes from the actors, especially when the windows burst in the ballroom with the Captain in it.
For an action movie, "Poseidon" isn't half-bad. It's nice, short, and visually spectacular. It keeps your heart pumping and provides a thrill in an efficient, yet effective manner. There are a few twists, but nothing that can't be predicted with a few deductions.
I would recommend this movie to people who like the genre itself and to those who are fans of the actors. Visual junkies are also advised to see this movie. For the rest of you, I would say that you should wait until this comes out on DVD to see it. |
