My wife and I were pumped about seeing a movie both of us could enjoy - romantic comedy with poker and Duvall. When it was over we wanted to sneak into another movie, any movie, as an attempt at washing away our sins. This film should not have been made. We cannot conceive how it was made. It was as if Bana admired Duvall from way back when (Lonesome Dove, Godfather) and when he accidently ran into him in Vegas on a weekend holiday Bana suggested "Hey, you busy this weekend? Well then let's make a movie. I've got a camera in my trunk and Curtis Hansen owes me money. I'll write a script over breakfast, you go put on a greasy hairpiece, and ... hey look it's Drew Barrymore! Drew, wanna be in our movie? You're free this weekend, Lucky You!"
The whole thing could have been made in 48 hours, seriously. Bana never changes clothes, there wasn't a unique set in the film, the dialogue appeared made up, in fact the only gag in the movie that may have taken time was the construction of the fake breasts on the chest of the compulsive gambler. On that note the suggestion should be made that maybe someone (Curtis Hansen) lost a bet himself, and the punishment was making this movie.
There was nothing to it. The film transitions from one poker scene to the next without so much as a musical score, there was zero tension in the film, which is what supposedly drives every scene in hollywood, we didn't believe the characters or care what happened to them, we never laughed, we weren't interested enough to be surprised, there was nothing to it. Every piece of episodic television I've seen this year was more interesting and succinct. The fact that a bunch of smart and talented people in Hollywood got together, spent millions and millions of dollars to tell a story and this was the most interesting, thought provoking, exciting, original tale they could come up with makes me want to abandon moviegoing altogether. Same Money, watch 'Lost'. |
