Lucky You attempts to be for poker what The Color of Money (tried) and The Hustler (succeeded) in doing for pool. Unfortunately, as it proves again (following Casino Royale's lead), poker doesn't translate well to the big screen. I enjoy watching Texas Hold 'Em on TV, but the game is too important a part of the movie to be cut into 4 minute segments where no real atmosphere is developed, and the rest of the script doesn't carry the load. Pool, on the other hand, can handle this kind of editing because it's all in one or a series of quick shots. I think this is a movie for people who THINK they like poker. And for me, Ms. Barrymore's character was way too cute and naive to be believable, or interesting (and please, Drew, keep your day job and don't attempt a singing career). |
