I am a Jane Austen freak. I love her novels.
I am ALSO a HUGE fan of the Pride & Prejudice mini-series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. It has to be one of the most watched sets of DVDs in my collection.
That said, I was expecting to go into this movie and be disappointed. I mean, it was hard enough to adapt the novel into a nearly 6 hour mini series. How in the world would they get it down to 2 hours and 7 minutes? Would it be Jane Austen on speed?
I must say, though I was not thoroughly pleased (though I expected I would not be), I was most certainly not disappointed either! :o) All the acting was well done. It was interesting to see different takes on the Bennett girls. After time, I adjust to Keira Knightley's portrayal of Elizabeth Bennett. McFadden wasn't broody enough in my opinion. He just seemed shy more than proud. I must give much credit to my enjoyment of the acting to Mr Bingley. He was PERFECT. :) Yadda yadda yadda. You'll all form your own opinions.
My only qualms with the film was the beautiful shots of the country/Lizzie. They were too long! Beautiful, but too long. I think SO much character development/relationship development could have been helped if they would have taken a few less of those shots, and had another family scene. I really missed Lizzie and Jane's relationship. Wickham was nearly cut out! I missed the culture of the time! The lack of showing this really destroyed a lot of Jane Austen's disdain for the upper crust of society.
So I'm rambling, but that's how I feel in a nutshell! |
