OK, I have to jump in here. I've never written a review. I was swept away for two lovely hours. I wish it were 3, or 4, or 5. I, too, have been a P&P fan since I saw the 1940 version. I then read the book several times, fell in LOVE with the A&E version, and saw the 1980 version.

I can see how the diehard fans like me would be upset that several scenes and dialogue were deleted. BUT, it would be impossible to include all of it in a movie. If I had it my way, this would have been made into a miniseries with the same actors.

Several people have said that this movie is a disgrace to Jane Austen and the book. I actually have to respectfully disagree. I believe many more people will be enticed to read her books by seeing this movie. My husband couldn't stand the A&E version, but he really liked this version. Also, I believe Jane is a true romantic at heart. I see Jane as Lizzie....torn between wanting to be intelligent and romantic. Isn't that why we all relate to Elizabeth? I'm a young woman, and believe trying to strike that balance is difficult even today.

I also have to mention the highly debated Mr. Darcy issue. Yes, Colin was awesome, and still is. But, I prefer Mr. Macfadyen's Darcy as he found something in Darcy none of us have ever seen. I was moved by his intuitive and intelligent portrayal. If you think about Darcy, he is still a very young man trying to find himself. He's lost his parents and has this HUGE burden put upon him at a young age. On the one hand, he is trying to do the right thing by society's standards, and on the other, he is WANTING to be true to himself. He does have a social disorder, as stated by himself. I never noticed before, but he really is trying to get Lizzie to understand him the whole time.

In any case, I felt the magnetism between Lizzie and Darcy made the movie. I've never seen that before in a P&P production. Great acting in other productions, but no feeling...no energy...no realism. All other actors were awesome as well as the visuals and music.

If you want to read a great review please read the NY times review by Stephen Holden.
