It's not easy to describe a movie about historical events to someone who didn't participate in them, or at least live in the era from whence they came. As a skater who skated pools in Southern California in 1975, I can tell you that this film is a great recreation of those days. The music, the visuals, the clothing and the partying are dead on. The plot, while a little forced at times (the "THIRTEEN"-esque love stories, Sid's illness) still stands up to memory for we old skaters and has plenty of interest for young people, if the reaction of the crowd at today's premiere showing is any indication. Heath Ledger's Skip is fantastic, and the rest of the guys inhabit their characters with sincerity and a great understanding for a time that they were too young to have lived through. Killer skate scenes that make you wanna hoot like you did in the old days! All in all, an exciting and satisfying film.
For a second or two, I almost forgot that I have an AARP card!!
