Flightplan is a well-planned suspense thriller

Flightplan is a well-planned suspense thriller that delivers exactly what it bills -- suspense at 35,000 feet aboard a state-of-the-art jumbo jet where every inch of the plane is explored in a mother's search for her lost 6-year old daughter. Jodie Foster delivers a powerful performance on which the movie depends, but she delivers and then some! The plot is also well-conceived in which Foster's character plays a propulsion engineer who is familiar with every inch of the plane, and the director utilizes every inch of the jet to keep the audience in total suspense throughout the entire movie, even at the very end when the mystery finally begins to unwind. True, the suspense is delivered at times in steely-blue coldness as crisp as the wintery Berlin scenery where the story begins, but that is the intelligence of the movie -- it does not depend on "Borne Identity" fireworks to keep the audience's attention and deliver theatrical entertainment. If you care about the welfare of a missing 6-year old little girl, you want the movie to have a happy ending given what's at stake -- but getting a happy-ending seems all but impossible the more the plot unfolds, as Foster's character becomes more cornered and desperate. Even if you think you know how the plot has to turn-out -- come-on, this is a major Hollywood flick -- you have no idea how it's going to work out until even more suspense is upon you, and the plot is not fully resolved until the last few minutes of the film. Flightplan delivers on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense and a well-constructed plot, and is well worth the theater price. The claustrophobic cinematography works best on the big screen, and is precisely the kind of movie that's best enjoyed in the theatre rather than at home. Contrary to other reviews on this board, you'll be sorry if you rent this one instead of seeing it on the big screen. You want to have some suspense-fun and walk out of the theatre feeling like a movie delivered? Go see Flightplan; you won't be disappointed.
