A solid and memorable thriller!

John Singleton ("Shaft," "2 Fast 2 Furious") helms "Four Brothers," one of the summer's most intense and interesting films. The cast is strong, with Mark Wahlberg ("I Heart Huckabees") delivering an energetic performance, Tyrese Gibson ("Flight of the Phoenix") a slyly charming performance, and Andre Benjamin ("Be Cool") an inspired and supremely easy-to-relate-to performance. But best is rising talent Garrett Hedlund ("Troy"), who is wonderfully understated as the more innocent of the four brothers. As you all know, this is a revenge movie: Adopted mother's murdered. Her four adopted children, angered, go on a rampage through Detroit to murder anyone involved. Though we've all seen these sort of revenge films before, "Four Brothers" is better than many because Singleton shoots the film with a raw style and perfectly utilizes his varied cast. I dug this movie's very brutal and unforgiving demeanor, a nice reprieve from the usual candy-coated Hollywood disasters. This isn't a film for the faint of heart, but if you're in a search of a violent, hard-hitting, and no-holds-barred action thriller which concentrates more on character and emotions than fancy visual effects ("Stealth," "The Island") I highly recommend you give "Four Brothers" a try. Its one of those movies which delivers what it promises (hard-boiled and fun thrills) and leaves you satisfied and fullfilled as you exit the theater. Great movie, Singleton, can't wait for your next one! |
