The grandaddy of them all.

Film expressionism's highpoint is marked by a pinch of films ("Nosferatu", "Der Golem", et FEW alt) and "Caligari" is, historically, the genre's grandfather. Twisted sets and charecters, gloomy shades and menacing shadows, a very twisted plot with one of the best twist endings in movie history. M. Night Shyamalan tore the page out of Mayer & Janowitz's (screenwriters) and Wiene's (director) book. The actors are all very good: Werner Krauss' Caligari is twisted in more ways than one; Conrad Veidt as the sonambulist Cesare is the epitomy of chilling menace; Lil Dagover's lady in distress is distressed, and Friedrich Feher as the love-struck become-detective VERY CRAZY Francis succesfully carries the film's weight. Lock the windows and beware of sideshows! Prequel to "Freaks", perhaps? |
