The Game of Their Lives: Heartwarming and Fabulous

The Game of Their Lives is a wonderful, heartwarming movie about the unexpected triumph of the U.S. soccer team over England in 1950. The team was put together only a few weeks before the World Cup, and consisted of just a bunch of average, hard-working men from St. Louis and New York, for whom soccer was not the main focus of their lives, as it was in other countries, such as England and many South American countries. At this point in history, the U.S. was just a fledgling in the world of soccer, and was not expected to do anything more than make a goodwill appearance at the World Cup.
The stand-out performance is by Gerard Butler, who plays goalie Frank Borghi. Borghi is the tacit leader of the St. Louis team, and is the glue that holds the team together when it seems like they have no chance. Butler plays the role brilliantly, and his athletic ability is undeniable as he is clearly shown diving for the ball over and over again.
This is a terrific family movie. There is nothing objectionable in it that would prevent parents from taking their children to see it. Children with an interest in soccer will definitely appreciate it; when I saw it, the majority of the people in the theater were children and their parents or coaches. They all cheered out loud at the climactic moments of the movie. I definitely give this film an A. |
