This movie is so well done that one has to stop at times and realize it is a movie. You are transported back to the period after WWII where some ordinary men, who happen to play great soccer, are given an opportunity for greatness by playing in the World Cup against England. The direction is subtle and not overdone, the details are wonderful and characterizations are superb, and in particular, Gerard Butler is amazing. He owns this movie. This film is based on fact and not fiction, but if you want some over-glamorized, ridiculously over the top film this is not it. The movie feels real and is a perfect example of an understated indie film that puts Hollywood epics to shame.
The most profound performance comes from Gerard Butler who is proving to be capable of any kind of role, and in fact, any kind of accent. He play the goalie, Frank Borghi, who holds not only the team together, but the entire movie together for that matter. When he is onscreen he draws you into the film, and his presence is charismatic throughout the movie, as he just rocks the screen in everyway. Butler never overdoes this role and is always just perfect in every scene. He is Frank Borghi and inhabits the role so completely you hardly recognize the fact that he has ever played another character.
This movie is worth the popcorn and tickets, and guess what? You can take the whole family and not be afraid. In fact, feel free to clap as they did in the theater I was in, it deserves a good round of applause. |
