This movie tells a true David and Goliath story about the U.S. World Cup soccer team back in 1950. It works on a number of levels
- the 1950s feeling is really well done, particularly costuming.
- the actors, especially Gerard Butler, are effective and believable as this collection of underdogs who beat the odds.
- the story was not overdramatized for the movie, but is shown in a low-key, realistic manner.
The actors were fine in general, but Gerard Butler's Frank Borghi was especially fine and his performance needed to be if the movie was going to work. Borghi was the heart and soul of that team and Butler's performance was strong, especially as he struggles with Borghi's sense of responsibility for an exhibition loss in the film. Butler continues to be a chameleon in appearance -- 1950's Borghi is a long way from the elegantly costumed phantom.
This is a terrific film for the family, especially for those with an interest in soccer. |
