Stunning...

I've read through a few reviews here and it amazes me at how little people really know about films like this, and especially about the Marine Corps.

I served 4 years in the Marine Corps as an Infantry Machinegunner. I walked out of the theater completely and utterly stunned by what I saw.

This movie portrays the picture PERFECT image of life before, during, and after war. I know... I was in Iraq at the start of the war (day 4 to be exact).

There's a scene where Swoff comes over a dune to find a number of dead (presumed Kuwati's) and find himself reflecting on the carnage. I went through the same thing when I rolled through Iraq and ran into dead civilians and Marines killed in combat (deatroyed AAV's and Humvees).

This movie isn't about action. You're not going to go into the theater looking for glorified battle sequences. This movie is all about the ming and heart of a Marine set in the time of the Gulf War.

A lot of what I saw brough back some pleasant, and very unpleasant memories. I left the theater with my wife in absolute silence as I thought about everything that was displayed in that film.

One quote stood out more than any other... "Every war is the same". To me, I personally felt that everything he (Swoff) went through, I did as well... except my experience was years later in a different war... but like he said... the war was exactly the same.

This film is stunning on so many levels. As a former Active Duty Marine it hits me home on a more personal level than say the average civilian. But, as a civilian (which I am now) I can watch that and get a more in depth understanding at the psychological and emotional "life" of a Marine. Why they think the way they do... why they act the way they do.

If anyone bashes this film it's for one of two reasons:

1. They expected a "war film" (action packed Band of Brothers/Saving Private Ryan style film).

2. They dislike the military or fail to grasp or understand their sacrifice/intent/objective.

I can't explain in words how absolutely fantastic this movie was. I hope everyone goes to see it, and really sits down to watch the film for what it is.

Hoorah... and Semper Fidelis!
