I has always been a fan of actor Peter Sellers, from his early beginnings in such British farces as "I'm All Right, Jack" and "The Ladykillers", through a string of Pink Panther films, Dr. Strangelove, and culminating to his masterpiece role as Chance the Gardner in "Being There".

I knew that he was a notorious womanizer, drug user and pain-in-the-ass on the film set. What I did not know is that Sellers was apparently a self-centered, insecure, immature mama's boy with a highly mercurial personality that changed according to who ever happened to be in his company. These personality changes are wonderfully expressed in the film's editing by Peter Seller's (Geoffrey Rush) face and body being morphed onto the person sharing the scene (be it his first wife, his mother, a director), then performing a monologue with Sellers speaking as if he was that person.

All these traits are brought to light in a straightforward, unapologetic style in "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers", an HBO produced cable film, starring the excellent Geoffrey Rush in the lead role, supported by strong performances from Emily Watson as wife #1, Charlize Theron as Britt Ekland (wife #2), John Lithgow as Pink Panther-director Blake Edwards and in a near-cameo, Stanley Tucci as Stanley Kubrick, director of Dr. Strangelove.

A minor complaint is that the anachronistic music selected to coincide with the period of Seller's life. But a minor flaw.

Highly enjoyable film. Rent it!
