If you are interested in Peter Sellers, don't watch this movie. Peter Sellers was not a nice person.
He had only one goal in mind and that was furthering his own star at anyone's expense. Witness taking his (second) wife Britt Eckland, to the hospital to have a baby and once inside he immediately leaves to go to some movie
production meeting or something like that; his mother is on her death bed and he shies away from visiting her because he is needed on the set. She dies. Oh, he did love his mother and his wives but he was never able to bring any happiness into their lives, nor anyone else's especially his children.
He had a violent temper to boot. Imagine destroying all your kids' toys because the kid tried to help correct a scratch on a new car by painting a racing stripe on the door. Actually, the kid had imagination. I would have
rubbed a hole in the door trying to get the scratch out.
If you are interested in Peter Sellers note that his unhappiness was brought on, in part, by people only thinking of him as a clown, someone to make people laugh. He wanted to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor, but was not given that chance until late in life. The movie Being There broke the mold and he did receive an Oscar Nomination (didn't win).
If you are interested in Peter Sellers, go see his movies. No doubt he was a comedic genius, but leave your impressions of him there. Don't see this movie if you like Peter Sellers. He was not a nice person.
If you are interested in Peter Sellers you might have to admit that the movie probably did not tell all the bad things he did as you come to know he was not a nice person from the things the movie does get into.
Now, with all that out of the way, the movie itself was extremely well done and the acting all around was nothing short of excellent. I believe Geoffrey Rush and the Director probably played down somewhat Sellers' behavior and
the part could have been played with more intensity in a bad way, of course. Charlize Theron as Britt Eckland will melt your heart and the movie is worth seeing just to see her. John Lithgow looks good with hair as he played Blake
Edwards, Sellers' director most of the time.
If you are interested in Peter Sellers, don't watch this movie. You opinion
of him may change drastically. Mine did. |
