Long time coming

I've seen nothing but kids' movies in theaters for the past nine years. Until about 2-3 years ago, we were lucky to have a string of gook kids' movies that were intelligent enough to hold parents' interest. Then the kids' movie business took a serious crap over the past 2 years or so. Everything looked the same and every so-called script sounded exactly the same. Over the Hedge blended into Hoodwinked, which blended into Open Season and a dozen other movies that seemed to be produced with minimal thought but big-name actors voicing the roles to boost ticket sales. Flushed Away isn't a work of genius, but it's about the best kids' movie to be released in the past two years. I must admit to being a big Aardman fan and actually liked Flushed more than Curse of the Were-Rabbit. The action was edge-of-the-seat stuff, the dialogue was well-done, and the voicing didn't seem like it was done by big budget stars looking for easy money. Everyone's heart seemed to be in this one. Although the poop jokes kept the kids amused, social commentary (often in the form of stereotypes, intentionally no doubt) kept the adults just as amused. This is the only kiddie movie of the past two years that I'd actually pay to see again. |
