Ridiculous Fun

First off, I loved this TV show. I think the character is Martin Short’s best, which says a lot considering the hundreds of brilliant characters he’s developed. Although making a movie about this type of character seems ludicrous, the whole this is done rather well. In the TV show, Jiminy Glick has a talk show, much like Letterman or Leno. Making a movie about Letterman or Leno sounds like a dumb idea, but Glick’s story is altered to fit a movie format. Jiminy Glick is on assignment at the Toronto Film Festival. He brings his wife and twin sons with him. At this point in Glick’s career he hasn’t yet hit the big time; instead he’s a reporter with the station in Butte, Montana.
Although I think Martin Short is an amazing talent, I don’t think he was fully utilized in this movie. In the TV show, Short plays a number of characters, including one hilarious old lady who’s no where to be seen in the movie. Besides playing Glick, the only other character he plays is David Lynch. Also, there are a number of other people in the movie that aren’t used to their full comic potential, namely Janeane Garofolo. Garofolo actually plays a role here, but there are a number of great star cameo of people playing themselves attending the film festival. It may be worth it to go and see who shows up in the movie. (Steve Martin, Whoopi, Jake Gyllenhaal, Susan Sarandon, Rob Lowe, Sharon Stone, etc. etc. etc.) Overall, the movie is very funny. It’s just ridiculous fun. |
