Being Russian, I might be just a bit prejudiced, but only just... First off, this movie was filmed together with Day Watch (2006) (i.e. Night Watch 2), so if you have the option, you must see them together. Similarly to Kill Bill, the first movie delivers a lot of action, but also all the confusion - the viewers are left hanging - while Day Watch ties the entire plot together (er, I'm not going to spoil it :).
The effects are a stunning combination of Fight Club close-ups, Matrix texture inserts, and Day After Tomorrow epic destruction. The plot is a typical Russian analysis of right and wrong - Crime and Punishment with an alternating backdrop of real-time Moscow and the shadow "matrix" world of creatures of light and darkness. There is a ying yang juxtaposition of light that's not always good, and darkness that's not always bad, and the balance that must be maintained at all cost for us to survive.
What makes this film better that 99% of comparable productions, is the 3-dimentional quality to the characters - not as it usually goes "despite the Sci Fi twist," but even more so because of it. Seriously, this is an ABSOLUTE MUST SEE for any sci-fi/fantasy/noir/thriller junkie. |
