I was excited to see "Nightwatch" and I have to say for the most part, it was an enjoyable movie. It wasn't as great as I hoped it would be, but it was a nice change of pace from the usual Western fantasy/horror movies. The main story was pretty cliche (Dark vs. Light, good vs. evil), there were a lot of characters but few that were memorable (most seemed pretty one-dimensional), and the movie ends on kind of a bleak note. That being said, what made this movie enjoyable was the likeable lead actor who does a good job of making his character relatable, a child actor who is also entertaining, and some pretty amazing visuals. This movie is suppose to be based on a trilogy, and in that sense the end may disappoint people if they don't know in advance that there's more story to come. Some people have complained that it was hard to follow; I kind of liked that the movie did not unfold in predicatable ways. Also, if you're going expecting there to be lots of vampires biting people, witches casting spells, and other "Buffy the Vampire"-like scenes, this ain't the movie for you (although Buffy does show up in the movie!). All in all, not a perfect movie but an interesting one that left me wanting to see the next part of the trilogy. |
