As film critic for a chain of radiostations, I found,"High Roller, The Stu Unger Story, interesting in its dark approach to telling a true story of a man, who was to cards, what Bobby Fisher was to chess. Genius is often self destructive and Michael Imperioli as Unger brings genuine proof to this adage. His mentor, Michael Nouri is. as always, professional and pleasing along with the female lead, Rene Faia. Many earthy and believable supporting people add to the moving story. One should watch for the scene between the two Michaels and the"menacing" Miffioso, who they try to impress inorder to get money for a coming gin tournament to save Stu from his creditors. I have not seen him before but any young actor should watch this old pro and his bag of marvelous acting tricks.I hope I will see him again in something perhaps a little meatier and longer. I give, "High Roller" a straight flush, and in the jargon of any poker player. "That Ain't a bad hand. |
