This was great fun...and I'm not a big fan of baseball.
The movie made me laugh, constantly. Jimmy Fallon is such a cutie- he has a naivete about him that is attractive and that appeals to Barrymore's character. She carried off her part well as a full-force career girl, climbing the corporate ladder, never meeting the right guy, until now. The love triangle here is an approachable topic. There are lots of love triangles having nothing to do with a third person, that break-up relationships. One person is obsessed with something, in this case baseball. It drives a wedge in the connection of the two lead characters.
At first, Barrymore's character views this as a possible good thing: she is needing to focus on work, shooting for a promotion. He can focus on the games, and neither one will feel neglected.
Their friends are likeable and you can relate: His buddies who connect as die-hard baseball fans with whom he shares his tickets, her friends she goes to the gym with... Even the nearby seatmates at Fenway Park, who become his "summer family".
We meet her parents which have a funny quirkiness about them. Dad who dyes his hair black and scares the dog, with his vampirish look.
Concerning visual style, I liked the cool baseball style lettering of the names, titles and credits.
This film entertains and also provides reflection on changing habits, taming obsessions and prioritizing life. |
