A MUST see!Joaquin Phoenix &Reese Witherspoon are superb. Phoenix has my vote for an Oscar performance & should be nominated for an Emmy too--best vocal performance. Impressive. Director James Mangold brings The story of "The Man in Black," to life as it jumps off the screen and into your soul. You can't help but start to sing the lyrics & suddenly you find your feet tapping in tune with the magestic sounds of Johnny Cash. As I walked out of the theater, I wanted to dye my hair black, buy a guitar, take voice lessons,& find some Cash Tribute band to allow me to join their tour! The film, produced by Mangold's partner Cathy Konrad (Identity, Scream trilogy, Girl Interupted,Kate &Leopold)captures the essence of Cash's struggles (stemming from childhood) & his quest for significance. I wanted to see more scenes depicting his later life and the accolades he began to reap in his final years, and the changed man he became. Mere words fail to describe the praises due unto Phoenix & Witherspoon. This truly is an inspirational, & fascinating story of Cash's ability to overcome chaos, dark shadows of his past, and create a legacy that continues to influence today's music & any prisoner yearning to be set free from despair. Dare I say, Cash was the icon that made wearing black cool. Very cool. |
