While this story encompassed the time period between J.R. Cash's birth and his famous 1968 performance to the prisoners at Folsom State Penitentary (which is a relatively small portion of Cash's life), it left me satisfied in a way that I never thought that this movie could.
The story itself is quite riveting, with relatively few slow spots. The only obvious part missing was actually hearing Joaquin Phoenix sing "Ring of Fire" in the movie, but I guess that's sort of a minor quibble.
Both Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix are impressive to watch as June Carter and Johnny Cash, respectively. To know that they sang their own songs is astonishing, to say the least. Both really made their characters come out and enthrall the viewers in the theaters.
The visuals and direction were exceptional. I loved feeling like I was somewhere besides the movie theater and the pace was quick enough so that I could enjoy the story, but get to know Carter and Cash at the same time. |
