What is really intriguing and scary about this movie is that it is not about vampires, werewolves or even ghosts. It is about us, people in different places and cultures. Frankly, I do not much when it comes to anything involving voodoo or, in this case, hoodoo, so I pretty much just like Kate¡¦s character, not knowing the whole background and slowly getting into this horror of unfamiliarity. And also unlike those said creature films, this kind of subject is actually much close to our real world, even thought most people do not encounter these experiences in real life. Still somehow, if you do not think the story is hooey, we know it is out there somewhere.
What I also like about this movie is that there is no such thing as inept blondes running around doing nothing but getting themselves killed even faster. What characters did in this story can be logically justified. Or maybe it is because my judgment is somehow clouded by the unfamiliarity of the subject. And in this story, I do not think there is a dualism of good people and bad people. What we saw is different people driven by their own personal motivations, their own backgrounds. It is gray area everywhere. In addition, the ending is good, despite the fact that I want Kate to get out of this nightmare. it kind of gives the movie the dark edge, deepening the disturbance and the doom that a true horror movie would have.
The directing is smooth, the storytelling is compelling and elaborate, and the acting is pretty on the money. As a Kate Hudson fan, I am glad to see her switch her performance into a different field. As a horror film, this one is one of the most memorable in recent years. |
