I had no desire to see Skeleton Key, what so ever. The trailers did not make the film look appealing, and it looked like just another horror movie. Simply stated, I was greatly surprised.
The story follows Caroline, a nurse who is helping a elderly man, Ben, who has recently suffered a stroke. His wife, played by Gena Rowlands, gives Caroline a "skeleton key" which allows her to opem evry door in the house. Things in the house see relatively normal until Caroline unlocks the attic door. She begins to discover that things are not how they seem, and taht there may be more to Ben's stroke.
Skeleton key works better as a "who done it" thriller then a horror movie. We see too many scenes of Kate Hudson exploring the house, and going toward the inexplicable noises in the house.
Skeleton key, for the most part, is a great mystery movie. The writers have made a wonderfully crafted script. The way all of the events in this movie unfold, are perfectly written. This movie is very suspenceful and filled of lots of thrills and jumps. There are so many wonderfully plotted twists too, taht were never bored, and were always left guessing.
The big and final "twist" isnt all that disappointing. All though I personally would have prefered a better explanation, I thought the twsit was good for the mood of the movie, and interttwined the houses past, with the houses present.
Overall Skeleton Key is probably the finest "horror" movie of the year, and it is defiantely worth seeing.
