Worthy effort, considering it's a movie

I am a huge fan of the books, I read them over and over again, and I relate so deeply to the characters. However, it's true that the movie is not nearly as good as the books themselves, but considering the limits of film and cinema, it was a worthy effort.
The storyline was completely changed in the case of Lena (Alexis Bledel) who visits Greece and falls in love. Despite this change, Bledel put forth a wonderful performance and worked well with Michael Rady, who was charming as Kostos. The magic of the pants was still there. However, Lena's was personally my favorite storyline in the book, and I would have loved to see what actually happened in the book transfer onscreen. It was a pleasant surprise to see they actually filmed in Oia, Santorini, Greece, the exact village where the book was set. The views were absolutely breathtaking.
In the interest of keeping this short(er) it's must be said that there is so much more behind these girls than is shown onscreen, but it is impossible to convey all of the emotions and turmoil in a 2-hour movie. You can read their thoughts and get swept up in the character's mindset, but you simply can't do that in a movie. The filmmakers did well in letting us in on that by having voiceovers of the letters the girls wrote to each other, but such effectiveness can only go so far.
See the movie, and read the book. |
