It's amazing to see different animals conquering against incredible odds. Animals like sea turtles lay near a hundred eggs and only about five make it to adulthood. However, only the mother seems to be a real part of this. In this movie, the incredible relationship between mother, father, and chick is truly breathtaking.
With Morgan Freeman's wonderful narration, the audience watches the awesome and often tragic experience of emperor penguins trying to successfully bring a baby into the world. The odds are against them. Just to find a mate, the males must travel about seventy miles, and the mothers must do this after laying their eggs and losing about a third of their weight. Freezing storms, ice, leopard seals, and even other birds desperately work against them, but, amazingly, life still finds a way.
You'd swear at times watching this that you can actually hear what the penguins aren't saying to each other. Clumsy little fat weebles, they remind us so much of what we can be like when we're vulnerable. This is an inspirational piece that teaches us that being a human parent is tough, but we actually have it easy compared to other animals. In addition, the vast and beautiful shots of the southern environment may convince people how much it is in need to be protected and saved.
For a documentary, this is a unique and fun experience. Children will enjoy the comical shots of the penguins slipping and sliding, and they'll love the shots of the chicks as well. Adults will marvel in the closeness of the family, and force down a lump at some of the tragedies as well. |
