As a longtime fan of PKD it was nice to see a movie stay so close to the source material. Many have complained that they couldn't follow the narrative, and it was very talky, but I think this is really the way the book is also. You can't eliminate the book's dialogue and make this movie, and as far as I can remember (I don't have copy in hand) most of the dialogue was VERY close to the book.
I loved the scene with the "missing" bike gears, though I thought the black humor of Freck's death (he thought he was taking 100 downers, but instead took LSD)was somehow not as funny as the book (yes, very black humor).
This movie is about both a bad drug culture and the over-reaction of goverment survelliance (they just install video monitors in your house when they "suspect" you are using, and no one seems to know who does what)which is relative to the government of today. We aren't as far gone as in this movie, but the hysteria over the drugs legitimizes, at least according to the government, their use of secret survelliance and the manipulation of unsuspecting citizens (ends justifies the means).
I still would highly recommend this movie. Be prepared to accept the animation technique, and if you can get through it you will find a unique movie. I think I would have prefered it without the animation overlay, but I understand the director's intent to show the world through the eyes of the drug users. |
