Thumbsucker Doesn't Suck

A movie that most people might not have even heard of up until the point that they read this, Thumbsucker is a surprise hit.
For those that enjoy the movies about self discovery and reflection such as I Heart Huckabees, or the independant film genre such as Donnie Darko, this is the movie for you. The excellent and well developed plot looks into the mind of a 17-year-old as he tries to find himself.
Lou Taylor Pucci, who plays the lead Justin Cobb in his debut film role, does a supurb job of portraying a believable character. Tilda Swinton and Vincent D'Onofrio are great as Justin's parents and both play memorable supporting roles. Vince Vaughn and Keanu Reeves, as the big names in the film do very well in their supporting parts. Both playing differnt roles from the characters they have played in past movies is a welcome and perhaps even stunning change. Vince Vaughn as the down to earth debate teacher is refreshing after his long list of recent comedy hits.
The directing style of Mike Mills, new to film himself, does well to bring out the meaning and plot.
All aspects come together to make this deep film memorable for all those that have lived through those awkward teens years. The epic struggle of the importance of finding yourself is the focal point drawing people in through simialr experience.
With minimal advertising this film is a silent sleeper waiting to be discovered. Arriving with a batch of fairly average looking shows, I suggest giving Thumbsucker a chance and perhaps you will be in for a memorable and thought provoking experience. |
