I definitely enjoyed this film alot. Many parts were laugh out loud funny. But I also thought the movie raised a lot of good points about growing up and surviving adolescence that made it more than a comedy.
I enjoyed this film on several levels. I thought this movie was very funny in its depiction of teen life and life when encountering problems. As a psychologist, I thought the view of thumbsucking, parenting, ADHD and other issues was realistic and very humorous. The film explored 'mental illness' or teenage angst in a very realistic way. I thought there was a good point -- don't worry so much about labels, just try to understand the problems and issues that people have. And give people some space to grow.
There were a lot of good characters in this film. The main character was well played as a bored, apathetic person who gradually finds some spark in his life. His coming of age story is rocky but inspiring.
The concept of the orthodontist with a metaphysical bent was hilarious, although Keenau Reeves might have done a more consistent job - he varied between overacting the part (very funny) and just being a concerned adult (more believable). The parents were very realistic, I thought. The dad was well done as a somewhat clueless but caring parent who can't seem to communicate with anyone. The mom was also well played. She was concerned about her son, yet also trying to live her own life. |
