My son talked me into seeing this one, and I'm glad he did. I don't come from this background, yet I found the story compelling, true to its nature and warm with humanity. It's real.
It's about real people, living in an environment that offers little opportunity to succeed, and yet, finding a way to believe in themselves under conditions most of us could never handle.
I liked the director's perspective. He didn't try to sugar coat it and make it look better than it is. He painted it accurate. The actors did a good job, and as the movie goes along, you can't help feeling the pain in each of these lives. And you can't help but admire their unrelenting desire to find some hope in every day, even though there is often not much to hang it on. It's real.
Perhaps those giving this movie bad reviews just couldn't handle the reality. Perhaps it hit too close or too far from home. Or, perhaps they cannot access the levels of emotion required to fully experience this movie, and that is certainly understandable.
