I thought the movie was good, but, I kinda felt funny rooting for DJay. Cursing at babies, hoeing hoes out the car, the usual. There's a scene where he'd dealing with a "customer" and he takes a casio keyboard as payment. Couldn't tell if the customer knows to offer the casio because everybody knows that DJay loves music or if he was a lucky hype. The movie doesn't do much setup on his love for music. You do understand that he wants a better life and you end up rooting for him because he actively makes a move to change it. My only other issue is the cycle of ignorance, females singing "It's hard out here for a pimp" (although admittedly very catchy) and talking about whupping a trick (sigh). Ain't gonna lie though, I really liked the scenes when they are looking for the melodies and the baseline. Tight. |
