It is hard not to get caught up in the sheer scope of this movie, we, the audience feel as if we're part of the very small town this movie is set in. We feel what life must be like for the woman in the story, we feel it's inner working and beauty. This isn't a conventional film, and it doesn't lay everything out in a nice tight structure, here I think it works for that reason, and it's a compliment to Georgina Riedel's strength as a director. Feeling as if we are a part of the girl's lives we get a taste of the small town, we see what it feels like to experience love, and also feel how much it means to them because we live there too. Because it's the little things in life that make us happy, or change us... and that's what this film is about and does so well. It shows us all of this, but in a realistic way, with a lot of heart. This movie transports you to a small town in such an entertaining way that you don't want it to end. The story is about three generations of women in one family, the head of this family is Dona Genoveva (Lucy Gallardo) next is her daughter Lolita (Elizabeth Pena) and her grand-daughter, Blanca (America Ferrera). When Dona buys a car the whole town hears about it, no secrets are kept here. Lolita is a divorced mother who runs her fathers butcher shop and Blanca hangs around town with her friends, each one is restless and wants out of such a small town. Dona has her gardener Don Pedro (Jorge Cervera) teach her how to drive, and during the following days falls in love. Lolita is pursued by a married man, Victor Reyes (Steven Bauer) who pursues every woman in town, and Blanca meets a young man that she believes she is falling in love with, what happens is a marvel to watch. Dona finds happiness and love with Don Pedro, Lolita finds love, but with an unexpected man, one who she is around all the time, but never truly sees. This movie was made in 2005, but because it's a small independant movie, it had a hard time coming to the big screen, my advice is go spend an hour or two with the Garcia girls, before it's to late, there will be plenty of time to see the blockbusters this summer. I give How The Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer a 4 and on my avoidance scale a BIG 0.
