This is a heartbreaking horror movie dealing with issues of loss, grief, and guilt. It’s also creepy and manipulative as hell. Director Ji-woon Kim uses some of the same scare tactics as we’ve seen in other recent Japanese Horror, but this film, unlike some others, actually has more to it. It is really moving, if you can open your eyes long enough to read to subtitles. At the very beginning you meet a young woman who has done something horrible and has clearly gone insane. The rest of the movie is like putting together the puzzle. But the movie doesn’t go for shock quality, which I like. A very crucial piece of the puzzle is revealed half-way though, unlike the usually end of the movie twist. The movie keeps the views in a state of disbelief longer than any movie I can remember, it also confuses them to no end, but takes that confusion away quite quickly, how strange and genius is that? The only thing I didn’t like was the use of scare tactics we’ve seen. It actually crossed my mind that I might be watching the new installment of “The Ring” series. But regardless, I was scared to death and by the end I was impressed by the great themes that flowed throughout the pure terror.
