I've never seen a more realistic protrayal of a dying man on the screen before. Daniel Day-Lewis now stands out in my mind as one of my most favorite actors. There were several scenes in this movie in which I was completely riveted.
The symbolism of the ox and little girl story with the house falling down: there were so many different interpretations that lept into my mind at the close of the movie - that in itself made the movie interesting. But the story coming to life in the end was especially powerful.
I thought the very end was a bit contrived - the message of the rise and fall of idealism seemed clear. I didn't appreciate the very last scene. I thought the questions that the movie raised - especially those voiced by Jack at the developer's kitchen table, were extremely relevant and poignent.
All that said, this has become of one my favorite movies of 2005. |
