Could have been better *spoiler*

This was a good film could have been much better. However, I believe the director chickened out and some reviewers seem to be confused about what this movie is about.
Clearly, Rose is in love with her father and desires more than a normal father-daughter relationship. Jack is attracted to Rose but he can't allow himself to be more than a father. Think of the early scene where Jack touches Rose's face and his thumb brushes across her lips. Rose takes this as a sensual moment. Jack, scared of his feelings, goes straight to Kathleen and invites her to live with them. Jack's purpose is clear, he does not want to be tempted by his own daughter.
Rose rubs her loss of her virginity into Jack's face, again not a typical father-daughter moment. Rose also tells Jack, after the boat takes Kathleen and the boys off the island, that he's scared of what people will think. Jack replies that he doesn't know what Rose is talking about. Rose answers, "yes you do". She then runs off.
Where I think the director chickened out was in completing the story. We know Rose and Jack kissed, or was it a dream? We know Jack, just before dying, asks for Rose's forgiveness. Why?
I certainly understand that this a very difficult subject to tackle, especially in today's political climate. But Ms. Miller should have confronted the issue in a more direct way. |
