The summer movie season is always one of great despair for movie goers who actually expect substance from their films of choice. In my humble opinion, and self appointed critiquer of films....this summer has been particularly awful!!!

That said, "Happy Endings," has served as a shining beacon amidst the darkness. This film has just about anything a real movie fan would like. It has great characters with incredible depth and muti-dimensionality. It has interesting plot twists, well concieved action, a comelling story line, and the perfect combination of drama and comedy.

While I loved this film from beginning to end, two things stood out the most for me. First of all, the cast was simply incredible. I cannot remember another film in recent years in which the actors brought such honesty to their roles. I felt a connection to each character, for better or worse, and was amazed by the realness the actors brought to the screen. I was most amazed by Lisa Kudrow's performance. After watching "Happy Endings," any memories of Phoebe from Freinds are gone. Similarly, Tom Arnold, not an actor one might expect to deliver a powerhouse independent performance, was superb in his role as Frank.

The second thing thar really struck me about this film was its uniquely twisted, and maybe even moderately sick, sense of humor. This film was simply drenched with what I can only asume to be the filmmaker's personality.

That said, this film may not suit the cinematic desires of the standard fare movie goer. Nothing blows up, noone dies, there is only limited violence, and despite the title might apply, the amount of sex in the film is far from gratuitous. This film is an oasis for those who want to see something good, but can't find anything in this year's flood of hollywood pap and crap. As such, I grant it my full unwaivering endorsement, and would encourage anyone with an artistic, creative, humorous, or intelligent bone in their body to check it out.
