Happy Endings is a funny, artsy, and generally well made film that is also more than a little bit confused. It is lacking a much of a plot and basically consists of very well writen characters bouncing off of each other with no real reason for doing so. The screenplay really doesn't bother with a plot but just characters. It is interesting that it works because hearing it makes it sound horrible when it really isn't.
The performances are very fine. Particularly that of Steve Coogan as a gay man who takes his curiosity a little too far. Maggie Gyllenhaal is also very fine as a woman who unwittingly falls in love with an older man. Laura Dern is the only one to turn in a disapointing and generally bad performance. She is generally a very good actor and the only one of the cast members I thought as a good actor before seeing the film.
Well worth watching but more than a little frustrating. |
