In this film, adapted from the 1979 novel by Cameron Crowe, there are so many star-making turns that we are constantly saying, "Oh, hey, there's ANOTHER person I know from..." In fact, Nicholas Coppola (before he changed his last name to Cage) is only seventeen in this film, and is only seen in a few shots, and doesn't even get to talk! There are THREE future Best Oscar Winners in this movie; Sean Penn, Nick Cage, and Forest Whitaker. Of course we all know that Sean Penn STOLE this movie from everyone, and his character of Spiccoli (sp?) is indelibably etched upon our minds forever. This is the story of high school students learning about life in a humor-filled fashion, but just below the surface, there is also much pathos inside this film, which is why it stands the test of time (twenty-five years at this writing): In fact, the subplot of Jennifer Jason Leigh's abortion alone, lifts this film far above the other forgettable teen-films of the early eighties. And who can forget Phoebe Cates rising from that swimming pool...???? Certainly not Judge Reinhold, that's for sure! So, in the immortal words of Sean Pean's Spiccoli, pop this classic into your DVD player, and repeat after me: "Hey Bud, let's party!" |
