The inevitible comparisons to Friday Night Lights, Remember the Titans and other sports films will come, but this depiction really hits on a pivotal point in this country's racial balancing and is just not to be seen as a basketball story. Haskins and UTEP are heroes, and their tremendous accomplishments are well-told in this family-fun and history-based movie. See it, it is excellent, and it should provoke discussions in your family about the role sports can play as a great leveler of social tensions. Athletic competitions and the human spirit that emerges from them can show us all that we can rise above cultural, racial or other barriers of discrimination that society tends to create. Stay to the end of the credits, when the real people in this story appear on screen to add some poignant views about the place in history they created.
You will enjoy this film, and at the end, you will be cheering for the Miners! |
