My husband and I just took our two little boys to this film; I usually gage a movies success by how well it holds our toddler's attention. Our 1 1/2 year old sat mesmerized the entire time and our 3 year old just wanted to get up and dance with the familiar and fun soundtrack. The colors are vibrant, the characters (and their names) are funny to toddlers, the pace is quick, there are several meaningful and developmentally appropriate messages, and my son hasn't danced that much to a soundtrack since Shrek 2. The only caution for parents is a scene involving alien attacks on the town; the "shooting" and "vaporization" of characters/buildings may frighten small children. Overall, I was far from disappointed and suspect that anyone who complains about this film either viewed it with an older audience or perhaps had too high of expectations. Not every animated film is going to match Finding Nemo; but as a psychologist and parent, I was very pleased with how entertaining and engaging this was for my little men. In regards to the "potty humor"... anyone with a pre-schooler knows that there just isn't anything funnier to them than gas. I may not agree with him, but I can't help trying to hide a smile when my son laughs from his toes as an animated pig burps uncontrolably. Take your little kids-you'll be glad you shared this with them. |
